Can the NDIS fund your holiday accommodation this Christmas?

Holidays can be a huge expense for any traveler, however travel costs can add up even faster if you require specialised support services or equipment. The good news is, if you are an NDIS participant or are eligible to receive NDIS funding, you may be able to get assistance for short-term travel or respite this Christmas. If your travel aims to support the goals of your NDIS plan, it’s possible to have some expenses covered by your NDIS funds.

What expenses can the NDIS assist with these holidays?

The NDIS can assist with holiday expenses that are deemed reasonable and necessary. Expenses that any other traveler would incur, such as food and drink, transport, and accommodation, may not be covered by your NDIS funding. However, there are certain exceptions where the NDIS can offer assistance. These include:

  • Your Support Worker: If you require a support worker while traveling, the NDIS will cover their support time as normal. However, you should be aware that long periods of support can incur a large cost, and the NDIS is unable to cover their accommodation or travel expenses.
  • Equipment: Any equipment required to assist with everyday movements can be claimed through your NDIS plan. This will vary from participant to participant, depending on your individual circumstances and requirements. This should be discussed with your plan manager prior to your holiday.
  • Transport: Special means of transport or transport fees that are higher to accommodate your disability can be claimed in your plan. However, if you do not require special means of transport, these costs cannot be covered by the NDIS.
  • Accessibility: Any costs incurred for accessibility may be able to be claimed in your plan, such as more expensive accommodation or means of transport. The team at Orange Plan Management can discuss your eligibility for these claims.

What is Specialist Disability Accommodation?

Specialist disability accommodation (SDA) is a range of housing designed for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. SDA properties such as MiHaven are designed with accessibility in mind, built with features to help residents live more independently and allow other supports to be delivered more effectively and safely.

If you meet the eligibility requirements for SDA, the NDIS will cover part of your living costs as part of your plan. Participants pay a reasonable rent contribution and other day to day living costs such as electricity bills.

The NDIS and Short Term Accommodation or Respite

Short Term Accommodation (STA), including respite, is classified as funding for support and accommodation for a short time away from your usual home. Your NDIS plan can cover the cost of your care for up to 14 days at a time. The team at Orange Plan Management can discuss the NDIS’ guidelines for short term accommodation with you.

Does the NDIS cover Medium Term Accommodation?

The NDIS can also fund medium term accommodation so participants have a place to live while waiting for longer term housing solutions. In most cases, medium term accommodation can be funded for up to 90 days if you are waiting for disability related supports. Visit the NDIS’ guidelines for medium term accommodation to find out if you’re eligible.

How to Maximise your NDIS Budget

Holidays can be expensive even without specialised care, so it’s important to budget effectively to get the most value out of your NDIS plan. Proper planning and organisation can ensure you get the most support possible, while enjoying a comfortable and memorable holiday.

Extended periods of direct assistance from your support worker can accumulate a large invoice. For this reason, it’s beneficial to reach an agreement with your support worker for a reasonable daily rate before your holiday.

The team at Orange Plan Management can help you maximise value from your NDIS funding and support services to ensure you enjoy your holiday and receive all the support you require. Contact us today to learn more about how NDIS can assist you.
